"I feel like we're not the right salon for you. Sorry," I was told by the stylists. I had a very disappointing experience at this salon. I went in for a color consultation as a new customer and was shocked by how dismissive and uninterested the staff were. I had called ahead to explain that I was looking for a root touch-up with highlights and mentioned my budget was ideally under $300. The receptionist said it was best to come in for a consult since they had stylists with different price points listed on their website. That made sense, so I agreed to a scheduled appointment with Duran.

When I arrived, the consultation barely lasted five minutes. Duran quickly informed me that her prices started well over $300 and would be even higher due to my base color, offering little to no alternatives. She briefly consulted with another stylist, who echoed the same sentiment, without much patience or willingness to listen. I tried pointing out the lower-priced options from their own website, but they were uninterested. One stylist even said, ‘So, is this what you wanna do, or…?’ making me feel like they just wanted me out of there as soon as possible.

Consultations are usually an opportunity for professionals to listen to their clients and find workable solutions, but that wasn’t the case here. If all highlight services start above $300, why schedule me for a consult in the first place? And why advertise lower-priced stylists if customers aren’t being matched appropriately? I left feeling unheard and disrespected, and I certainly won’t be returning, even if my budget increases. The lack of professionalism and care shown to a new client speaks volumes about this salon. This is one of the few times I’ve felt compelled to leave a review because I’ve never experienced such rude and arrogant service.

I used to love this place with all of my heart, but now I only love it with most of my heart after Danielle, my favorite stylist left. Don’t get me wrong, everyone here is still amazing and does a wonderful job still! The salon is very clean and modern and you can tell from the moment you walk in it’s going to be a great experience.

It was very fun experience and I cant wait to go back! for many reasons. one, the hairdresser who worked on me, Violet, is so good at her job! the time flew by and it was nice to experience something that most hair salons can’t offer. It was just great. Id recommend this over any other place! Thanks Violet for making me feel and look amazing! 🙏

If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would! I have been living in San Jose for about five years and I have been to at least six different hair stylists, none of whom have really impressed me very much. I finally decided to try Umbrella after reading all of the amazing yelp reviews and I was NOT disappointed! I booked an appointment with Adrian, who is incredibly sweet and kind. She really listened to what I wanted and gave me suggestions and feedback based on my hair type. I brought a few different inspiration photos and found it difficult to articulate exactly what I wanted, but she understood right away. She was very enthusiastic and did a GREAT job on my cut. It turned out even better than I had expected. She gave me tips on how to take care of and style my hair throughout the session and let me know why she was doing what she was doing. I have finally found my go-to salon and I could not be happier!

Hunter is an expert in the dusting technique where you just dust off the split ends instead of a full trim or haircut when length comes off. He alternates appointments between dusting and a regular haircut/trim. This has helped me grow my hair longer and healthier. It’s been pretty difficult finding a stylist who does dusting and is good at blunt hair cuts.

update: Unfortunately on multiple occasions i’ve had to wait 30-60 minutes for my appointment because previous clients were running late. The last time I came in, my appointment was moved from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. When I came into the salon I ended up waiting till 2:45 to get seated in the chair, and my stylist was shuttling between doing my hair and another girls hair at the same time. The disregard for time and double booking appointments is not acceptable. Although I loved my results, I won’t be returning.

I've been looking for a good place ever since I moved back to the Bay Area with no luck until I finally came across Umbrella Salon - Bill Vu is quite literally one of the best stylists I have ever come across. His ability to read how your hair grows out is elite and I was especially impressed with the time he spent to understand what I was trying to go for. He did an excellent job and I cant recommend him enough. He even spent a super long time using just scissors instead of clippers to have more control on the sides. If you're looking for a good haircut experience in DT San Jose, Umbrella is definitely a lot better than other places in the area (I've tried pretty much all of them).

Aubrea has truly impressed me with her fun personality and professional cutting skills. It was very pleasant working with her and feeling pretty with the cute beach waves she curled for me (which was the first time my hair was ever styled in a way that is right for me). No wonder Umbrella Salon is one of the best in San Jose. I cannot wait for our next appointment together!

First time going here today and I had no expectations. But Mose, my hair stylist, gave me a haircut that was the best one I've ever had. Honestly, he spent over an hour cutting my hair and used techniques that I've never seen before. Very good at getting a beautiful layered look. This salon is owned and run by people from Japan and Hon Kong and specialize in San Jose hair, but def knows how to fix Caucasian hair too! I'm really pleased and will def go back. Also, if it's your first time, you get 20% off. My haircut cost me 48 dollars today + tip. Really good deal.
