The food was pretty bad for a pasta joint that is supposed to have a great reputation. I’ll caveat the service is great and the staff is nice and very accommodating but the taste and flavor of the pastas was not great. We did the 8 course or so tasting menu it was maybe $430 for two of us with wine. But definitely not worth the price - I’ve had much much better pasta in the city

"Thoughtful" is the word that comes to my mind when I reflect on my experience at Flour + Water (F+W). We were able to taste a variety of items across the menu as part of a corporate event and each and every dish was fresh, exceptional, and stood on its own.

Every dish had their unique spine and the intensity of flavor that was brought out from the primary ingredient. Healthy usage of ricotta and parmasean also helped enhance the texture and flavor profiles, especially the pasta. The pizza was wonderful and surprisingly had weight even in the after taste. Every course just felt thoughtfully crafted. Substantial. Well made.

It was a bit weird that I wasn't blown away by a single dish. No single dish had an eye-opening moment. Perhaps it was the corporate setting or the wine. But again, F+W is a wonderful place.

I feel like I've only uncovered 5% of what F+W has to offer. I'd love to return and try out the rest.

Funny enough, we had planned (or so we thought) to go to the Flour and Water Pizzeria, but right before we were about to leave to the restaurant we realized we had made our reservation at the original (?) Flour and Water. Either way, we weren’t upset about our mistake. We were a group of four and shared some appetizers: their seasonal squash appetizer, and arancini – both were delicious. I had the veal pappardelle which was rich but delicious, everyone loved the food. The service was initially very attentive, but we were a group of 4 friends who hadn’t seen each other in a while and took time to make our minds up, which I think irritated our server. He became a little surly through the rest of the dinner, but overall not enough to ruin the experience. The atmosphere is very straight forward, and it was a bit hot and stuffy inside even with the windows open, but the food is outstanding. I also thought the prices were reasonable given the quality of the food. I highly recommend trying Flour and Water if you have not already!

have been to f + w around six times now over the past year, so i’ve experienced the menu changes as well.

my most recent time was pretty average. the pasta was nothing to rave about and the sourdough was so hard/burnt it was hard to enjoy. the mushrooms in one of our dishes were overcooked, and we had to wait quite a bit for water and wine refills. the dessert was just kinda odd and was tough to eat.

if I had done this review back in august, I would’ve given f + w five stars. I loved everything we ordered. unfortunately, the three stars is due to the lack of consistency over the course of my visits as i’ve had more three star experiences here than five star ones.

I do love the ambiance and some of the dishes that are more californian cuisine. i’d still go back, but there are definitely other pasta spots, like Itria, that i’m more inclined to frequent over flour + water.
